Walking and Hiking

Get ready to hit the trail.

Raring to get out into nature, breathe in some restorative country air and have an adventure? You can stride straight out into idyllic surroundings on one of the many wonderful walks that are on Farlam Hall’s doorstep.

You’ll find the mixed landscape of fells, tarns and moorland offers a variety of rambles for beginners and more experienced walkers peppered with historic sights and breath-taking scenery to mark the passing miles.

Close by, there is the end of the Northern Pennines, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that offers quiet, unspoiled countryside for contemplative strolls.

Four miles to the north of Farlam, join the popular Hadrian’s Wall Path to enjoy a little history as you take in the awe-inspiring scenery. Check off some of the more impressive sections of the wall at Steel Rigg and the Crag Lough circular route. Or, gain an insight in to the lives of the Roman soldiers and explore the historic remains at Birdoswald and Housestead Forts.

As if all that weren’t quite enough, the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site is under an hour’s drive away, making a day trip to one of the world’s most celebrated national parks perfectly viable.

Still struggling to plan your route? In your room directory you will find our Let's Go Walking booklet with a choice of suggested walks nearby and local points of interest, or ask our Reception team about other recommended walks in the area. We can also help organise guided walks tailored to the sights you most wish to see.

If a walking trip sounds like the perfect escape, then Farlam Hall is the ideal spot to kick off your hiking boots and put your feet up after a long day’s hike.
