Stargazing

Immerse yourself in nature's wonders

Discover the night sky above

When you are fortunate enough to catch the right conditions, then a sky full of stars can be awe-inspiring.

At Farlam Hall we are in an area with minimal light pollution, on the fringes of one of the largest Dark Sky Parks in the world. This means when the sky is clear and there is little or no moon, then conditions are perfect for seeing the night sky.

Stargazing helps individuals slow down and appreciate the enormity and beauty of the universe and it is a simple way to connect back to nature. Studies have shown that regular stargazing has lots of benefits for your mental wellness, including stress reduction and improved sleep.

If you would like to stargaze when you are with us, then check the lunar calendar to see when is the best time to visit, as a clear night with little or no moonlight is optimal. For the best chance of stargazing, the sky is darkest on the nights before, during and soon after each new Moon, when there is no Moon in the sky. During these times, there is no moonlight to wash out the light from fainter stars. As a result, you will hopefully be able to see thousands of stars with just your naked eye, compared to just a few hundred at other times.

See the links below for a calendar of moon phases and a calendar of astronomical events so you can work out the best times for stargazing.

To see the night sky in the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, then there are a number of  locations that have been recognised as Dark Sky Discovery Sites. These are excellent places to stargaze, have good public access and host public events throughout the year.

Twice Brewed Inn Stargazing

Located within the protected Dark Sky park, the venue benefits from minimal light pollution, meaning you’ll have a clear view of the Milky Way arching across the sky and see thousands more stars than can normally be spotted from our towns and cities. This allows visitors to experience the incredible starry skies above Northumberland with astronomers from the Stargazing team at the Twice Brewed Inn. Shows are held regularly throughout the Autumn and Winter.

Kielder Observatory

Kielder is ranked as the best place to see the stars in the UK. The zone known as the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park (NIDSP) is the first of its kind in England and one of the largest in the world, joining the likes of Death Valley n the USA.

Talkin Tarn Stargazing Pavilion

Opened in Spring 2023, the Talkin Tarn Stargazing Pavilion offers a beautiful location to experience the dark skies above the region. The building’s design is inspired by the shape of a bird’s nest and outlines the stars above and so is an ideal base from which to stargaze. It is built using traditional materials and located in the South-East corner of the Tarn with the venue offering a quiet place to take time out both day and night.
